  • The lowest currently available wireless system that makes sense to use, is the Cell Phone GSM system; mostly we are able to achieve a speed of 9,600 bits per second with the currently available systems. The GSM modems are able to provide higher speeds but it is unlikely that the average cell that we would be connecting to is able to provide the higher speed. The GSM system will be an option in a video surveillance system where the user is not expecting to receive more than one or two frames per second. Examples of such systems could be vehicle tracking, traffic patterns, emergency services or patient visual verification. The codex that will be use in a GSM system is a codex that supplies a low frame rate but a crystal clear picture.
  • The next highest level is most probably the Wireless LAN product range. This product range operates mainly in the 2.4gHz Spread Spectrum range. In Southern Africa this is an unlicensed range, and is therefore quite popular. The product range is commonly referred to as 802.11 compliant and the most common is the 54Mbps Wireless Bridge or Access Point. There are a lot of competition and development in the 802.11 markets and there is currently product that claims to perform at 200Mbps. The most common mistake that is made when expressing or referring to speed is to double up because the product is capable of full duplex, however, in so far as video is concern there is little benefit having full duplex as video is mostly in one direction. The codex that would be used within this solution would range from 64kbps to 9mbps depending on the number of video streams to be carried on a single wireless link.
  • The next set of products would be basically the same as the previous but operating in the 5.8gHz frequency. These products are capable of running at 100mbps providing +-55Mbps of available bandwidth. The cost of this type of solution is more than double that of the 2.4gHz product. The 5.8gHz is also available as a full duplex product.
  • The fastest or highest available bandwidth solution currently available with any decent distance range is the ATM set of products ranging from 155mbps to 622mbps. The design of such a solution would be drastically different from the previously described products. This solution requires ICASA licenses.
